A few thoughts on the Academy Awards.
This is the first time I actually knew someone who got on stage. Congats on the nomination for best documentary, Eddie Schmidt and KIrby Dick – both of whom have been on this show. Search their names in the archives if you want to see those classics. I enjoyed Chris Rock. His trip to the movie theater made it clear that we make a big deal over the films that most people don’t see. But I wished he had the guts to say again that the only men who watch the Oscars are gay. The Academy hates Martin Scorsese. I used to think that couldn’t be true, but the only time he will win will be when he’s in a wheelchair and gets some special honor. Jude Law does not need Sean Penn to stand up for him. I love Hilary Swank, even though she can’t give a speech. Who couldn’t love Jamie Fox. That guy who won best documentary short, and who said, “I have practiced this speech since I was a kid,” apparently forgot to make it brief enough to let his partner also speak, who probably also had been practicing his speech for years. Why do people keep letting Robin Williams speak in public? Favorite dress? Selma Hayek. Favorite commercial? None. Favorite win? Best Adapted Screenplay for Sideways.
